On December 3, 1967 the first heart transplant was performed.  50 years of innovation in science and technology since that date has bought about improved life expectancy and outcomes – yet there are still many unknowns.

My Broken Heart is a feature-length documentary shot over 5-years.  The documentary follows the lives of Jillianne Code, Mark Wilson, and Cody Halfpenny as they face the challengers of heart transplantation. 

Exploring the journey from end-stage heart failure, LVAD, heart transplantation, and organ rejection, My Broken Heart is an unflinching look at the possible complications and consequences of organ transplantation. 

Jillianne collapsed suddenly at the age of 28. She was diagnosed with Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy. Even with a multitude of tests and biopsies, her doctors could not figure out why her heart was failing.

Cody was born with a congenital heart defect. He was stable and thriving until the age of 13, when his health took a sudden turn. Multiple cardiac arrests, a stroke, and an emergency LVAD lead Cody to be listed for a heart transplant.

Mark was born with muscular dystrophy which lead to congenital heart failure. Mark lived with heart failure for 14 years before getting a heart transplant. After 18 months with his new heart, Mark is fighting acute rejection.

About the Filmmaker

My Broken Heart is Nick Zap’s first feature documentary.  The documentary was a 5-year odyssey in finding a tool to cope with the fear, uncertainty, and shocking news of his wife’s heart failure diagnosis.  Although Nick holds a PhD in Educational Psychology, he has left academia to pursue his passions of creative expression through film, entrepreneurship, and writing.
